CHM111, B 10/31/2006 Bottled Water, Is It Worth the Money? Is water from the tap really unhealthy for you and is bottled water truly healthier? Are the potential health differences worth the money spent on bottled water? Most believe bottled water tastes better or has some sort of health benefit, which is why bottled water is so prevalent in our society today. Still, some believe paying a dollar or more for something one can get for free buy turning handle seems stupid. Bottled water can be of higher quality, but because the laws do not require the same rigorous testing, some bottled water is actually more unsafe than tap water. Bottled water is not tested for things such as: E. Coli & Fecal Coliform, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and other viruses (Pure Drink or Pure Hype?, 1999). Tap water is also tested more frequently for chemicals and bacteria (Carpenter, 2005, Section 1, para. 3). Bottled water is, in general, of very high quality.
