Lyons office: 3017 KING Phone: 645-8255 Email: Office Hours: Monday 9:00 – 10:30 am; Tuesday 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm Tutor: To Be Announced Email: Office Hours in Biology Study Center (1054 KIN): Help Session: Mon evening 5:15 pm – 6:15 KIN lecture hall room 1024 Text: Biology,8 th edition , Campbell and Reece Course Description BSC 2010 is the first part of a two semester introductory biology course designed for those interested in pursuing a career in life sciences. This course provides an overview of the biological processes and function at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels. Course Objectives The intention of this course is to provide the building blocks necessary for a student to gain a strong foundation in general biology. This course will cover 5 major units in introductory biology: 1) Atoms and Biological Molecules, 2) Cellular Biology, 3) Biochemistry and Energy Transformation 4) Molecular Genetics and 5) Physiology. The diversity of knowledge gained in BSC 2010 will serve as a platform for the student and aid understanding in more advanced classes. Specific course objectives will be given for each topic. Expectations and Student Responsibilities Attendance at lecture is required. Material on exams will be taken from lecture notes and from the textbook. Your success in this course will depend on regular attendance. Weekly help sessions and tutorials are offered to provide you with a chance to ask questions and review materials with teaching assistants and other students. Come prepared to weekly help sessions and tutorials with specific questions formulated. As much as possible, slides shown in lecture will be taken from your text and will be available on the website before the lecture. Please take advantage of these online slide sets by downloading the PowerPoint files and printing out the slides leaving room to take notes during lecture. The slides available online are outlines and figures to aid you in taking notes during lecture and are not a substitute for lecture attendance or the material presented in class. Students should read the textbook prior to coming to class so that students are prepared during lecture to take notes in detail on the concepts presented. Class will start promptly at 1:25. Arrive on Time. Turn off cell phones, pagers, etc before entering the lecture hall. Be courteous – talking in class should be restricted to questions. Tutorial Sessions: Weekly help sessions will be held on Monday evening 5:15 pm – 6:15 KIN 1024. The tutor for this course will conduct the weekly tutorial sessions. The Biology Study Center located in room 1054 KIN is also open daily for further assistance
