Unformatted text preview: Lecture 18 Wednesday March 7 EE 332 Semiconductor Devices Problem Assignment Monday Æ 6.13 What happens when two conductors are brought into contact? If the highest filled electron energy state in the first conductor is higher than the highest filled state in the second conductor, then that high energy electron could lower the system energy by moving to the conductor with lower energy states. What quantity tells us the highest energy state? Work Function The FermiEnergy of a conductor is derived based on electron kinetic energy. With two conductors, a common zero energy reference (taken at infinity) must be chosen and potential energy included in the electron energy. I will use FermiEnergy to be the highest kinetic energy of an electron in a conductor at 0 o K, and the FermiLevel to be the highest total energy of the electron. The work function , φ , is the energy required to take an electron from the conductor at theFermilevel to infinity. Metal to Metal Junctions Electron flow will take place until the...
