What quantity tells us the highest energy state? Work Function The FermiEnergy of a conductor is derived based on electron kinetic energy. With two conductors, a common zero energy reference (taken at infinity) must be chosen and potential energy included in the electron energy. I will use FermiEnergy to be the highest kinetic energy of an electron in a conductor at 0 o K, and the FermiLevel to be the highest total energy of the electron.
