AFGHANISTAN 1. Where is Afghanistan located? – Afghanistan is located in Asia. It is often called the crossroads of Central Asia. Its southeast border is with Pakistan, on north with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, on northwest with Turkmenistan and on west with Iran. 2. What is the terrain of Afghanistan? - The terrain is landlocked; mostly mountains and desert. 3. What is the climate of Afghanistan? - The climate is dry, with cold winters and hot summers. 4. What is the ethnic composition of Afghanistan? - The main ethnic groups are Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Turkmen, Aimaq, Baluch, Nuristani and Kizilbash. 5. What is the religion of Afghan people? - Sunni Muslim 84%, Shi’a Muslim 15%, other 1%. 6. Afghanistan’s economy has traditionally been based on what commodity? - Its mainly commodity is been based on natural resources. Some of them are natural gas, oil, copper, chromate, talc, barites, sulfur, lead zinc, iron, salt, precious and semiprecious stones. Also agriculture it’s based on wheat, corn, barley, rice, cotton, fruit, nuts, karakul pelts, wool, and mutton. And from the industry small- scale production for domestic use of textiles, soap, furniture, shoes, fertilizer, and cement; hand woven carpets for export; natural gas. Its major markets are Central Asian republics, Pakistan, India, Iran and EU.
