Chapter 6 – Language Acquisition & Disorders in Preschoolers The Study of Language Acquisition Methods of Study: -Cross-sectional studies: many subjects from different age levels are studied simultaneously for a relatively brief period of time -Doesn’t show changes over time in individuals -Longitudinal studies: several subjects studied repeatedly over an extended period of time -Helps reveal overall patterns of development/change -Gives detailed child-specific information Acquisition of Preverbal Behaviors Pre-verbal behaviors that precede the production of words and phrases -Cooing = vowels and gurgling -Babbling = strings of syllables that become more complex over time, more speech-like intonatin and phrasing -Noises/sounds -Gestures = pointing, head-shaking -Eye contact The First Words -There is a parallel between single-scheme pretend play (one action, such as pretending to feed a doll or pretending to drunk from an empty cup) and the production of first words. -Should appear between 10 and 16 months of age -Learn almost 1 word per day -Average 2 year old has a vocabulary of 200-300 words -Learn ~1 ½ words per day between ages of 2 and 3 Two-word Utterances -Signal the beginning of syntax, which is arranging words in proper order to form meaningful sentences -Appear after child has a vocabulary of 50-60 words -Should appear around the age of 18 months -Adults depend on context to interpret these sentences -Classified according to communicative intent -Naming -Negating -Recurrence Acquisition of Grammatical Morphemes -Morphology = word structure -All words are morphemes, but not all morphemes are words
