Unformatted text preview: BSCI425 Learning Guide Week 7 Mar. 8 ­11, 2010 This week read all of chapter 6. Make a list of the different types of survival that are discussed, again be aware of observed vs. predicted survival. Pay attention to Fig. 6 ­10 what points does it make? Be sure you understand the concept of the life table and the calculations that are involved and any assumption that apply. There will be an on ­line quiz due by the start of class on Weds 8 ­Mar, as well as continuation on the clicker quiz from last week. Pay attention to Tables 6 ­1 through 6 ­9 be sure you can follow what is being presented. Review cumulative probabilities, why are they multiplied rather than added? You will need to work through the Kaplan ­Meier method on your own. Make sure you understand median survival time and relative survival rates. Learning Activities: • Review chapter 6 of Gordis, as with chapter 5 you may what to read it twice there is a lot of information that you need to understand and a number of new descriptions of standard items in epidemiology. • Visit the CDC website explore the site. Please book mark the site especially the weekly Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/. • Review the questions at the end of the chapters. • Connect this material to the previous concepts we have covered in chapters 1 ­5.
