Unformatted text preview: BSCI425 Learning Guide Week 9 Mar. 28 ­Apr 1, 2010 This week we will finish chapter 8, which will be covered on the second test on Apr. 01. The test will cover all material since the last test, through chapter 8. On Wed we will begin to explore risk and causation (chapters 11 and 12). To understand risk and causation in various situations you need to have a clear understanding of the three types of studies; random clinical trials (RCT), cohort studies and case study. They are illustrated in Fig. 11 ­1 to 11 ­3 and described in chapters 9 and 10. Although we will not go over the material in chapters 9 and 10 in lecture, you need to be familiar with the basic types and what the terms in Table 10 ­ 11, page 198 mean, you also will should be familiar with examples from the book and the class of each study type. If given a description you should be able to describe what type of study it is and some of the uses and limitations. There will be an on ­line quiz this week, but because of the test on Thursday I have extended the open period until Friday at 6:00 AM. Learning Activities: • Finish you work on chapter 8 of Gordis, as with previous chapters you may what to read it twice there is a lot of information that you need to understand and a number of new descriptions of standard items in epidemiology. • Read chapter 11 and go over the problems • Visit the CDC website explore the site. Please book mark the site especially the weekly Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/. • Review the questions at the end of the chapter eleven. • Connect this material to the previous concepts we have covered in chapters 1 ­8 The learning laboratory (Thursday) this week will be test 2. ...
