BSCI425 Learning Guide Week 12, Apr 19-22, 2010 Discussion Questions Included This week we leave the textbook and focus on real world situations and problems. On Monday we will look at Rita’s Cowell group’s work using of appropriate technology to address an endemic problem (Cholera) in a developing nation. I have posted the paper and you need to read the paper before class (there is an short on-line quiz due by mid-night Monday). Please bring the paper to class. We will works through the paper using group work. On Wednesday we will look at a different important current issue “Duel Use Education” Duel use education is encompassing term for biosecurity, bioterrorism, biosafety and bioethics. It is an international issue and one that is of concern to all countries. Look at the FAS site. We will focus on case study seven reconstructing the influenza virus http://www.fas.org/biosecurity/education/dualuse/FAS_Basler/index.html . I have posted several background papers on the 1918 influenza controversy.
