H106 S ECOND  E SSAY  A SSIGNMENT Your next essay will be a short research paper.  Choose one of the two topics and write a  1,250-word essay.  It will be due in discussion during the week of December 7-11. P APER  T OPIC  1:  I T S  M IDNIGHT ; D O  Y OU  K NOW  W HERE  Y OUR  M ILITARY  I S ?   People around the world are used to receiving visits from the United States armed  forces.  Not counting the major wars—the Persian Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan and  Iraq—the U.S. has invaded, bombed, raided, or intervened in over thirty countries (that  we know of) since 1990. While these intrusions have a big place in those countries’  history books, they scarcely make it into ours. Your assignment is to choose one  operation from the list below and write a 1,250-word history of it, using your research to  furnish  a context  (a background of previous events, important persons and ideas, and a  setting) and support  your interpretation  of the event.  Your paper must have a point,  rather than just providing a description. 1991 – Zaire, September 25-27. 1991-96 -- Kurdistan, Iraq,  Operation Provide Comfort 1992 -- Sierra Leone, May 3, 1992. 1992 – Kuwait, August 3, 1992. 1992-2003 – Iraq, Operations Northern Watch and Southern Watch. 1992-95 – Somalia, Operation Restore Hope.  1993-95 – Macedonia. 1993-95 – Haiti,  Operation Uphold Democracy 1995 – Bosnia,  Operation Deliberate Force . 1996 – Liberia, April 11, 1996.
