Your next essay will be a short research paper. Choose one of the two topics and write a
1,250-word essay. It will be due in discussion during the week of December 7-11.
People around the world are used to receiving visits from the United States armed
forces. Not counting the major wars—the Persian Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan and
Iraq—the U.S. has invaded, bombed, raided, or intervened in over thirty countries (that
we know of) since 1990. While these intrusions have a big place in those countries’
history books, they scarcely make it into ours. Your assignment is to choose one
operation from the list below and write a 1,250-word history of it, using your research to
(a background of previous events, important persons and ideas, and a
setting) and support
of the event. Your paper must have a point,
rather than just providing a description.
