Relate story about the two individuals. A window into a professor's life: Friday I was contacted by two students. The first one called me about 2:00 pm and said that he hadn't had time to study for the exam and would it be possible for him or her to take the exam at a later date. Other school activities had consumed more time than expected in the time prior to the exam. The second student talked with me about 1/2 hour later. This student had just finished the exam, had done very poorly and asked me what the effect of doing poorly would be on his semester grade. He also told me that the reason for his poor showing was that a close relative had died three days previously and that he had been on the phone concerning that extensively over the days prior to the exam.
