Be sure to include your name, SID, Section Number, and GSI name on your homework, and staple it together. 1. Let There Be Light (7 points) Consider two beams of light with different frequencies. One has a frequency of 6 10 14 Hz, and the other has a frequency of 6 10 17 Hz. (a) Which beam of light has more energetic photons? What are the energies of the individual photons in each beam? (3 points) (b) Which beam of light travels faster? (1 point) (c) Calculate the corresponding wavelengths for the two beams of light. What part of the electro- magnetic spectrum are they in? (3 points) 2. Telescopes... In Space! (4 points) Weve all seen that images from the Hubble Space Telescope have fantastically beautiful resolution. But what most people dont realize is that its main mirror is less than a fourth of the size of the largest ground-based telescopes! (a) If larger telescopes have better resolution, why do Hubbles pictures look so much nicer than those from the bigger telescopes?
