Feb 10, 2009 BIOL 361 Lab 5 (One-Way ANOVA) 1. Plants produce an enzyme called phosphatase to bind phosphorus molecules and convert them from an unavailable form to an available form. Dr. Barb Moffatt is interested to assess whether pH level affects the activity of phosphatase. The dataset Lab5_Q1.sav (in Lab 5 folder) contains the results of an experiment to test the effect of pH on the activity of the enzyme phosphatase. Dr. Moffatt isolated a large volume of phosphatase from a plant, divided it into 20 aliquots and randomly assigned each aliquot to one of four pH levels (3, 5, 7, 9) and measured the enzyme activity (in units of μM/min). From previous studies, it is known that the activity of phosphatase is distributed normally in plants. Use this dataset and a parametric test to test the claim that pH level affects the activity of the enzyme phosphatase. a) Clearly state the null and alternate hypotheses. b) Identify the following: The response variable, the level of measurement of the response variable, The factor(s), the levels of the factor(s) c) Perform the test at alpha = 0.01. What can you conclude? d) Does the assumption of equal variances among populations appear to be valid? e) Create boxplots and error-bar plots to assess which if any of the pH levels results in a different enzyme activity. f)
