Nonverbal communication Non verbal comm. Defined 1. all behaviors attributes and objects of humans other than words--- that communicate messages that have hared social meaning 2. does not involve sign language, written words or words transferred electroically Non verbal codes: 1. NV codes are distinct, organized means of expression 2. Consisting of symbols and rules for their use. Aspects of NV codes: 1. use of body 2. vocal behavior 3. time 4. use of space 5. use of touch Kinesics : 1. the body a. guestures b. posture- immediacy and relaxation c. movement 2. the face a. expression b. eye behavior Functions of gestures 1. Illustrators- add to the verbal message 2. Emblems- 3. Adaptors- a. meet immediate physical need 4. Regulator- direct the flow of the conversation Facial Expression Paralinguistics Voice quality 1. speed. 2. Pitch 3. Rhythm—fill pauses “uh” “um” 4. Vocal Range 5. Articulation- how well you pronounce words Vocalizations 1. sounds we utter that don’t have the structure of language “eh”
