Atmospheres An atmosphere is the layer of gas above the surface of a planet. An atmosphere can be described by its composition, temperature, and pressure. A gas is made up of atoms and molecules which occasionally bump into each other, but otherwise they move freely through space. The composition of an atmosphere describes what atoms and molecules are present. The temperature of a gas is a measure of the amount of energy each atom or molecule has. This mostly tells us how rapidly the atoms or molecules are moving. The pressure of a gas is a measure of how much it pushes on its surroundings.
