Hydroboration-Oxidation Purpose: The purpose of the experiment was to produce a mixture of alcohol from an alkene through hydroboration, oxidation, and hydrolysis reactions. Abstract: retention time of the products, area of peaks, and composition of mixture Experimental: didn’t heat the flask, added the drops 5-7 minutes, waited for 10 minutes, stopped after step 6. Introduction : Talk about hydroboration-oxidation (look it up) Alkene to alcohol Three steps (1) hydroboration (2) oxidation (3) hydrolysis Talk about each step Analyze the products from h-o reaction with GC Talk retention time/ boiling point Peak area Composition Furthermore, the borane acts as a lewis acid by accepting two electrons in its empty p orbital from an alkene that is electron rich. This process allows boron to have an electron octet. A very interesting characteristic of this process is that it does not require

Unformatted text preview: any activation by a catalyst. • The Hydroboration mechanism has the elements of both hydrogenation and electrophilic addition and it is a stereospecific ( syn addition), meaning that the hydroboration takes place on the same face of the double bond, this leads cis stereochemistry. Notes: • Results • Define mechanism • Talk about hydroboration o Why you dried the flask • Talk about oxidation o Go through the mechanism o Major vs minor product (due t steric hindrance and electronic effect) o Go through hydrolysis step o Why use hydrogen peroxide o Why use sodium peroxide o Why is it important to butter the reaction mixture with sodium hydroxide o What will happen if u use too much sodium hydroxide • Talk about extraction • Talk about GC o Identify peaks o Give composistion, says its consistent with what was expected o Why 1-octene was in the GC...
