For each of the following situations, describe the population, type of sample, sample size, and variable of interest: a) An administrator in Langara College selected a random sample of size 4 in each of the classes in STAT 1124 this semester. Each student in the sample was asked how many hours they are planning to spend each week on the course. Population: Langara students enrolled in STAT 1124 this semester Type of sample: Multi-stage: Stratified sampling by classes, sample random sample within each class Sample size: 4 times the number of classes in STAT 1124 Variable of interest: hours a Langara student in STAT 1124 is planning to spend each week on the course. b) A random sample of 5 sales offices was selected from the 35 sales offices of a large computer company around the world. All employees in each of the office sampled were asked to complete a questionnaire to see whether they are satisfied with their job. Population: all employees in the computer company Type of sample: Cluster sampling by sales office Sample size: Total number of employees in the 5 offices selected (it can not decided before the sampling process – a problem with cluster sampling) Variable of interest: employee job satisfaction c) Statistics Canada is planning a large scale survey across the country to estimate the number of new employees businesses plan to hire in 2009. The sampling plan calls for dividing the country into provinces and territories and classify all businesses in each of the province/territory into different industrial groups. A random sample of 20 businesses will then be selected from each of the industrial groups within each of the provinces/territories. Population:
