Neural Tube Defect Test One such test is for alpha-fetoprotein, a blood test done on the mother. Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by the fetal liver and is present in the amniotic Fuid. Abnormally high levels may indicate a neural tube defect in the fetus. Part of a multiple marker test which includes estriol, inhibin and hCG. Not diagnostic.
