Secondary metabolism • is a historic name for metabolites that did not seem vital or essential compared to primary metabolites • more than 200,000 compounds are known (in plants and microorganisms), i.e. ‘secondary metabolites’ comprise >99% of these. Many are lipophilic. • many secondary metabolites are not conserved across species but play important roles in chemical communication and defense (of plants and microbes) and may be used for other purposes in mammalians. • during evolution, certain ‘secondary metabolites’ were turned into very vital cofactors or oxidative protectants in mammalians, such as ‘vitamins’
