3 An Overview of Engineering Thermodynamics I The word Thermodynamics is a compound word that is made up of two words of Greek origin: therme: heat dynamis: power In the most general sense, Thermodynamics is the study of the conversion of heat energy into other forms of energy, such as mechanical, chemical and electrical; and vice versa. Thus, it is about generating work from heat (as in an electric power generating station or an internal combustion engine) and heat from work (as in a room air- conditioner).
