The Right to Privacy, Warren, 1890. GOALS FOR TODAY GOALS Motivate the issue. Discuss the “Memory Revolution” and relate it to “Moore’s Law.” Introduce “Parkinson’s Law of Data.” Introduce the fundamental issues regarding privacy in relation to modern computing technologies. Wikipedia Wikipedia Privacy (in Latin privatus 'separated from the rest, deprived of sth, esp. office, participation in the government', from privo 'to deprive') is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively. The boundaries and content of what is considered private differ among cultures and individuals, but share basic common themes. Privacy is sometimes related to anonymity, the wish to remain unnoticed or unidentified in the public realm. When something is private to a person, it usually means there is something within them that is considered inherently special or personally sensitive. The degree to which private information is exposed therefore depends on how the public will receive this information, which differs between places and over time. Privacy can be seen as an aspect of security — one in which trade­offs between the interests of one group and another can become particularly clear. Questions Questions What were the basic computational prerequisites for this research project? Could this have been accomplished without computing technologies? How does this relate to other medical applications, such as CAT scanning? Goals of the Human Genome Project Project Identify the set of all genes (i.e., the genome) in human DNA (an amount of information equivalent to 200­1000 page phone books). Determine the sequences of the 3 billion DNA subunits (bases) and store this information in a massive database for analysis. Purpose of the Human Genome Project Project Prevention of disorders. DNA diagnosis. Cancer research. Genome maps. Bioengineering (i.e., oil spills) Serious Privacy Concerns? B. C. Massive calculations (number crunching). Information management. Combinations of A and B. I was raised to think of computers as number crunchers. Recall Moore’s Law Recall Other Trends Since 9/93 Other Motherboards (measured in MHz/$) have a doubling time of 12.4 months. Hard drives (measured in MB/$) have had a doubling time of 11.7 months. Modems (measured in kbps) have a doubling time of 16.8 months. The Memory Revolution Over Several Decades Several DRAM has been doubling in speed roughly every two years. Total disk drive capacity has increased 7­ fold over the past decade (a bit below Moore’s Law). Conclusion: Memory access time and capacity roughly obey Moore’s Law. Remarks: Moore’s Law encourages growth in memory capacity. More memory encourages the use of more memory intensive techniques. Initially postulated to explain workload and time, Parkinson's Law has been applied to and found valid in many realms. "The amount of stuff one has expands to fill available cupboard space" is one familiar application. Information technology also has its applications. Parkinson's Law of data: "Data expands to fill the space available for storage". Parkinson's Law of Bandwidth Absorption: "Network traffic expands to fill the available bandwidth". Social Issues Social PRO: Complex programs can be used to improve administrative efficiency and curb criminal activity – the right wing argues that privacy law is used mostly by “those who have something to hide”. CON: Parkinson’s Law of Data applies to databases in all administrations promotes a “guilty until proven innocent” situation (everyone is monitored and stored), unforgiveness (once you’re in, you’re in forever), and the potential for victimization.
