April Hobbs Wilder English 1102 25 January 2008 Like Water to a Fire: A detailed comparison of the and the movie of Like Water for Chocolate. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel is a novel that focuses on taste, smell, passion, and of course, food. When these factors are begin diminishing, and the story begins to be based on just a typical love story, we have the movie of Like Water for Chocolate . The movie version of this novel does not capture the audiences’ attention through imagination and the audience's perception of the characters. This is caused by important scenes being cut and even the alteration of the personality of certain characters. When major scenes are left out, the description of the food and the characters are not being emphasized. At the start of the movie, the first visual is the chopping of onions. Initially, you get the feeling that the movie will continue to focus on the preparation of food in relation to the story, but this is not the case. This can be seen when the chilies are served as the meal for Esperanza and Alex’s wedding. In the novel, it states that the preparation for this meal begins days in advance, “Begin shelling the nuts several days in advance . . . many hours must be devoted” (229). seen. The movie takes away from the tedious job that Tita has with preparing food. Thus, affecting the way the audience sees the life of Tita. The lack of the description of food preparation is not the only way that the movie takes away from the tedious job that Tita has with caring for her family. The novel is separated into Months. Every month represents a different meal being prepared. Even though this is the structure of the novel, this is not the structure of the movie. The movie is separated by dates and even location. Although this gives the audience more detail about the story, it doesn’t depict the life of Tita very well. The structure of the novel
