In 1983 there was an assignation attempt on our president. In reply to John Hinckley’s failed attempt President Reagan stated, "You won't get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There's only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don't actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time. .. It's a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers."(Gun Control, 2001) Many people think that stricter gun control laws would keep America safer, but gun control will never take firearms out of the hands of criminals and is a violation of our second amendment right. “The USA has experienced recent gun-related tragedies, including the deaths of 14 students and 1 teacher at Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado in April 1999, and the death of 12 citizens by a trader in Atlanta, Georgia, in July of the same year. On 14 May 2000 (Mother's Day in the USA) hundred of thousands of mothers and their families held a ‘Million Mom March’ in Washington, DC, the largest gun-control rally ever, and demonstrated in 70 other US cities.” (Malcolm, 2002) This march and thousands others like it have one purpose. That purpose is to pass laws and legislation to control or take away the American people’s ability to have firearms. Unfortunately no amount of legislation is going to fix the real problem. No amount of marching or law passing is ever going to make a criminal obey the law. Criminals are going to continue to live outside of the rules and system that the rest of us honor and live by. In an effort to hedge the focus of gun control groups, Solicitor General Elena Kagan stated that the peoples right to bear arms is a, "vital part of the nation's effort to fight international terrorism,” (Malcolm, 2002) All people desire to be protected from criminals. Passing laws to make firearms illegal dose not protect them from criminals. It makes them vulnerable to their attacks. Every time a law abiding citizen loses the right to poses a firearm that same person becomes vulnerable to the criminal these laws and controls are intended to restrict. In other parts of the world there are increasingly strict gun laws being enforced. The strictest of these are in Britain. “The Gun Control Bill resulted from the recommendations of the Cullen report into Dunblane. The ban covered ownership of handguns over .22 caliber and all handguns unless kept securely at gun clubs. Other key points of the legislation included stringent new security standards for gun clubs,
