Here are several criteria to determine whether a publication is scholarly or popular Criteria Scholarly Journals Popular Magazines Audience Scholars, researchers, professionals, practionners, students General Public Author Researchers, experts with acknowledged credentials Journalists, authors with no easily verifiable credentials Readability Technical, formal, specialized terminology Plain language, informal References Footnotes, bibliographies, references No documentation Appearance Long articles, graphs, charts Short articles, glossy layout, ads Publisher Scholarly publishers, university presses, research institutes and organizations. Varies. Mostly commercial publishers. For example: Times-Warner Availability Libraries Local newsstands Source: Library Basic tutorial, UofO
