Many evangelical Cs went to Geneva, and got inspired by calvins church and committed themselves to a re-evangalizing of their homeland. Where Calvinism took root, there was a push to abolish mass. In 1540 at trent, an attempt to reconcile to two side was made, but there was a realization the gulf was to large to brige. the council of trent in 1545 (lasted 20yrs) called the catholic church to repudiate the evangelical lutheran doctrine canon by canon. It wanted to declare catholic orthodoxy on matters that the reformers disagreed on. It declared the validity of pilgrimages, icons, prayers to the saints, doctrine of transubstantiation, the value of church authority with regard to scripture, hierarchy remained the authority of the bishops and pope remained. It proposed a reform of the catholic church (counter reformation) saying tahat clergy should be properly qualifed and worthy of respect meaning that they need proper training, residence and moral dedication so each diocese had to establish a
