In early Christian writings by the jewish-Christian scholar pantaenus in 73 said that when he went to India he found that mathew’s gospel was already there.   Christiand and jewish communities had settled along the Indian coast from the 2 nd centuary onwards. At least 6 communities trace their origin to apostle Thomas. They are the chaldian churh of the east, the indepandant Syrian church of Malabar, the malankara Syrian right catholic church, the orthodox Syrian church, , the mar thoma church, and the st. Thomas evangelical church. These all interacted with representatives of the roman catholic church form the 16c onwards. The portugese empire lasted for about 500yrs in India. They tried to impose their own rights and eccleastical authority over the Thomas Christians b/c they were shocked at the strange beliefs which they attributed to heretical Nestorian ideas. The Thomas christens resisted and refused to call mary mary mother of god, only mother of Christ, they refused to venerate icons and waited 40-60 days before baptizing infants. They found the European ways strange.
