William harris 1913: from Liberia, had a vision of the archangel Gabriel while in prison, and he started preaching the power of Christ over the spirits in W.Africa and baptized thousands.   In SA a zulu prophet Isaiah shebe established a group which stressed payer and divine healing and gathering at a sacred place (their Nazareth). It combined biblical and African symbols and motifs (inclulturation).   In 1921, simon kimbangu from congo began a healing ministry and attracted crowds, the belgin authorities took fright and sentenced him to death, then later life in prisonment. In the 50s a denomination in his hounor the kinbanguists was the largest single independent church in Africa.   Independent African churches differ from mission churches in: the wearing of flowing white garments and headgear, the use of drums, chanting, empahasis of spiritual healing locating the cause of sickness mostly in the relm of evil spirits, charms, whitcraft, and defeat these powers in the name of Christ. They might tolerate polygamy and customs
