March 6, 2008 RADIO Early Radio Marconi create a “wireless telegraph” in 1896 used radio waves to carry messages in Morse Code 1912 Titanic disaster first time to get info from one place to another without having to walk there Radio Act of 1912 first licensed radio transmitters had to apply for a license in order to broadcast this controlled noise on radio (it was too busy otherwise, too many wanted to transmit) Largely used for military purposes Radio Programming Fran Conrad first regularly scheduled programming news and general interest before this, it was mostly a military entity David Sarnoff 1916- planned to bring music to radio Ridiculed, but later became head of RCA First to take radio in direction of commercialization NJ Station WEAF 1922- first commercial radio station broadcast mostly entertainment and music 1927- Paid programming came about on radio Just in about a span of 5 years, it went from military entity to something for the public
