Lab 9: What Do You take for Pain? Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to isolate naproxen from an over-the-counter analgesic. Naproxen acts as a base, which reacts with sulfuric acid: H 2 SO 4 + C 14 H 13 O 3 Na → NaHSO 4 + C 14 H 13 O 3 H. The acetate part of sodium naproxen receives hydrogen, forming acetic acid while sodium bisulfate is produced. This reaction can be observed as a white precipitate occurs upon the addition of sulfuric acid. Adding more sulfuric acid in the solution increases the amount of sodium bisulfate and free hydrogen, therefore decreases the pH. The solid product is recrystallized from a mixture of ethanol and water. One possible reason for using this co-solvent system is because there are situations where no single solvent works and miscible solvent pairs must be used. The compound should be very soluble in one of the solvents and have limited solubility in the second. The crystals dissolve in the minimum amount of hot ethanol in which they are more soluble.
