Leader as a Maker of Culture - Coord, direct, and control human behavior in organizations- external mechanisms to make sure ppl perform, coordinate, do the right thing o Mechanisms are costly and can have unintended negative social consequences, but you need the external mechanisms o Ie. If motivation is wrong or leadership is too autocratic or work design is wrong or structure is wrongs than it hurts performance - Corporate culture - many of the advantages of external controls (control, direct, coordinate human behavior), but with internal controls of ppl controlling themselves thru their own values, beliefs, and norms of how to behave (if ppl share values (know how to behave) - Culture- usually used to define nations or tribes of ppl, been applied to org’s for 15-20 yrs. o 20 yrs ago at height of foreign competition – Japanese were winning in many industries, McKinzie - looks for excellent american companies- these companies all had strong corporate cultures , wrote book In Search of Excellence, started interest and focus on culture - Concepts o Definition - system of shared meaning held by members of an organization that distinguishes organization from others o Personality of a firm o Elements : (what do ppl share?) Values : what’s important to pay attention to Ie customer driven companies- customer is number one
