Maggie Long Ragonesi SOC 315-41 June 1, 2010 Week 1 Questions 1. How does Kofi Annan’s definition of developed country differ from that of the United Nations Statistics Division? Explain and give some examples. Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations, defined a developed country as “one that allows all its citizens to enjoy a free and healthy life in a safe environment” (Developed Country, 2010). In contrast, the United Nations Statistics Division asserts that “there is no established convention for the designation of ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ countries or areas in the United Nations system” (Developed Country, 2010). While Annan’s definition implies that developed countries are better able to provide freedom and security to their citizens, the U.N. Statistics Division notes that the agency’s use of the labels “developed” and “developing” are not intended as a judgment of a country or area’s stage in the development process. Rather, these designations are only used for statistical convenience (Developed Country, 2010). According to the UN, Japan, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries are considered developed in common practice. In international trade statistics, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia and Israel are also considered developed countries although they may not fit Annan’s definition (Developed Country, 2010). 2. What did Weber argue in his studies of rationalization in The Protestant Ethic, and the Spirit of Capitalism? Explain and give some examples.
