If you have any problems accessing the course site, call the ACS Help Desk at 858-534-3ACS or e-mail acs-help@ucsd.edu. LECTURE HOURS: in Center 115. Welcome to Chemistry 6BL , the primary introductory laboratory course for Chemistry. This course provides an introduction to experimental procedures used in synthetic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry. This course is preferably taken concurrently with Chemistry 6C (or after completion of the Chemistry 6A-C series). ADD/DROP DEADLINE: The deadline to add or to drop a CHEM lab course without a “W” is the end of the second lab meeting. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT Textbook: CHEM 6BL Online Laboratory Manual. The lab manual is available on WebCT. Laboratory Notebook: Must be a "carbonized" notebook (i.e., must have a removable duplicate of each page). An appropriate lab notebook for this course can be purchased at the University Bookstore or from ACS Student Affiliates (ACSSA). Proper Laboratory Apparel (Safety): Chemical splash goggles must be worn in the laboratory at all times. Safety glasses do not provide splash protection and are not permitted. Long lab coats and closed shoes (front and back. No sandals permitted!) are also required. Lab coats and splash goggles can be purchased at the University Bookstore. A Non-Graphing, Non-Programmable Scientific Calculator: Should be able to do basic arithmetic/statistics and scientific notation. No other types of calculators will be permitted during the exams. SAFETY EXAM CHEM 6BL students are required to demonstrate an understanding of general laboratory safety and UCSD Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Rules. Each student is responsible for studying these topics and passing a mandatory safety exam. An optional safety lecture will be presented on Monday evening, June 28, 5:00-7:00 PM in York 2622. The safety exam (25 multiple-choice questions) will be administered online (log onto WebCT and select: CHEM 6BL Lab Safety Training - 2010 Summer Session I ). Students may take the online exam any time during the availability period: Tuesday, June 29 (8:00 AM) - Wednesday, June 30 (4:00 PM) . Exam results will be available to students after the exam availability period closes. A passing score for the exam is 75% (19 correct
