Homework 1 – Due July 1 st PSYC 60 – Introduction to Statistics, Summer Session 1, 2010 1. Describe the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics (1-2 sentences). 2. Create a 4 column frequency table based on the following number of parking tickets received by a sample of UCSD students: 0 1 5 2 3 1 2 0 1 2 1 1 1 2 2 3 4 4 0 1 3. Create a histogram for the parking ticket data. (Don’t forget to mark the numbers on each axis and give each axis a label. Bars in a histogram should be touching, unlike in a bar graph.) 4. A company claims that their new sports drink boasts the number of miles that the average person can run before giving up. You are going to give them one shot to prove it by having a randomly chosen person consume the drink and then run. First you collect data on how runners do without any drink. Describe what rule or criteria you would use to accept their claim (use the significance level commonly used for psychology).

For standard deviation, treat this data as a sample, not a population. Create the table used in class (including columns for scores, difference from mean and squared difference from mean).
