Lecture Notes on Disorder & Deliverance: Exodus I. Torah, Pentateuch, Exodus Exodus/Shemoth- known by Jews as Shemoth- means names Exodus means departure When examining ancient Israelite civilizations, consider: A. Reason and Revelation 1. Also believed in power of revelation or insight that comes from a divine source. 2. How revelation is to be applied is reason. B. Theocracy 1. Ancient Hebrew civilization was theocratic in nature., meaning governed by Yahweh. C. Yahweh 1. YHWH- derivation: Jehovah 2. The name of God could not be spoken because the idea of the divine being II. Narrative of Moses Greek name meaning departure or going out. Part of the story that has captured imagination of the world is the story of the narrative of a slave people delivered from bondage and their journey through the wilderness to a promised land. Key phrase: “Let my people go!” the voice of Yahweh speaking to the slaves and on behalf of them. 2
