I think a CEO should have experience in the different departments because responsibility of the chief executive officer to align the company, internally and externally, with their strategic vision. The core duty of a CEO is to facilitate business outside of the company while guiding employees and other executive officers towards a central objective. The size and sector of the company will dictate the secondary responsibilities. A CEO must have a balance of internal and external initiatives to build a sustainable company. However, any big company is not going to consider anyone that doesn't have extensive experience in running progressive larger businesses. While some people can rise based on smarts, most will have an MBA, other advanced business degree, or an advanced degree in the field e.g. if it's an engineering company, the CEO might be someone with a PhD in engineering. To be a CEO of a large company, you need to understand law, finance, accounting, human resources management.
