This research was done for the Office of International Programs at the University of Tampa. Internal research was conducted to gain a better understanding of the clients desires as well as assist the team in defining the research scope. Detailed secondary research was conducted which explored what comparable schools currently offer for their international student orientation. Pre-qualitative research was also conducted to get an idea of students opinions. All three of these types of research were used to design the research objectives. An e-mail survey was developed and sent to all international students currently enrolled at the University of Tampa. The goal of this survey was to answer the research objectives. Using SPSS, the research team analyzed the data collected from the survey through frequencies, statistics, crosstabulations, correlations and t-tests. Detailed explanations of these analyses are provided in the Analysis/Implications portion of this report. Using the statistical results along with internal, secondary, and pre-qualitative research, the team formed several recommendations to improve the international orientation. These recommendations are listed below: Provide multiple check-in dates for students Increase the number of social activities conducted Improve the UT campus tour. Increase awareness of courtesy airport pickup that OIP provides Incorporate a buddy system to pair international students with domestic or other international students already enrolled at UT Incorporate optional information sessions for orientation Incorporate ice-breakers where students break into smaller groups Provide follow-up or one-on-one sessions with an OIP International Student Advisor Provide students with as much information as possible before arriving at UT The research team hopes this research and the recommendations will assist the Office of International Programs in improving the international student orientation. 3 International Student Orientation Study - Spring, 2010 INTRODUCTION The main goal of this research is to explore ways in which the Office of International Programs (OIP) at the University of Tampa (UT) can improve the check-in and orientation process for international students entering the university.
