Overview of kidney functions • 1. Regulation of extracellular fluid (ECF) volume and blood pressure (via regulated urine output) • 2. Regulation of osmolarity (via regulated salt and water loss in urine) • 3. Regulation of the concentration of all ions in the ECF, via regulated urinary loss of Na + , K + , H + , etc. • 4. Excretion of wastes (eg. urea, ammonium) • 5. Production of hormones/regulatory molecules (erythropoietin regulates red blood cell production; renin is involved in blood pressure regulation and Na + balance)
