Syllabus Winter 2019 Nan Rainey Office building, room: Anderson Hall, 2nd floor, Office F Phone: 525-8752 (email preferred) Office hours: 1 to 2 PM Monday to Thursday Email: [email protected] Building/Room: ANDERS 205 Meeting Times: Monday / Wednesday 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM School of Foundation Studies, Department of Foundation Studies, Savannah DRAW 101 - Drawing II: Composition and Media Section: 36 CRN: 22007 SCAD Mission: SCAD prepares talented students for creative professions through engaged teaching and learning in a positively oriented university environment. Course Description: Students enhance observational drawing skills and produce work from imagination in linear perspective through research and experimentation with technique and media. Students refine the use of black-and-white media, learn to use color media, and skillfully integrate content, concept and composition. Prerequisite(s): DRAW 100. Course Goals: The following course goals articulate the general objectives and purpose of this course: 1. Students will become familiar with the visual language used to compose observational drawings. 2. Students will learn about connections between composition, media choice and concept. 3. Students will develop fluency with drawing processes and media, including color. 4. Students will learn to use research and experimentation to inform content. 5. Students will practice analyzing and critiquing drawings in relation to concepts, composition and content. 6. Students will acquire terminology to discuss relationship of composition, concept and content. 7. Students will become knowledgeable about the principles of linear perspective for the development of observed and imagined imagery. Student Learning Outcomes: The following course outcomes indicate competencies and measurable skills that students develop as a result of completing this course: 1. Students will organize the compositional relationship of objects to each other within the picture plane to meet the goals of the image. 2. Students will use a variety of media, including color, to produce convincing pictorial space, form, light and shadow. 3. Students will integrate presentation and craftsmanship into the concept of a drawing. 4. Students will use research (i.e., sketchbooks, quick studies, digital resources) to incorporate process in their drawings.

5. Students will observe, research and analyze the professional work done in art and design fields. 6. Students will articulate the relationship of composition, concept and content using appropriate terminology. 7. Students will utilize the principle of linear perspective to facilitate the transformation of an observational drawing into imaginative imagery. Schedule of Classes: Key events including assignments, projects due dates/exam dates: Pre-quarter assignment: Complete the following assignments before the first class.
