Exam 4 Potential Short Answer Questions 1. Define the term emotion. A: a response of the whole organism, involving physiological arousal, expressive behavior, and consciously experience. 2. How do level of arousal and task complexity combine to affect task performance (see figure 11.3, page 374)? A: Performance peaks at lower levels of arousal for difficult tasks, and at higher levels for easy or well learned tasks. 3. Describe the James-Lange theory of emotion. 4. What is the facial feedback hypothesis (presented in lecture) and which theory of emotion does it support? What are three brain structures involved in emotion (presented in lecture)? A: Prefrontal cortex: check our impulse, regulate our emotion. Hypothalamus: start chemical process to face stress (raise the blood pressure) Amygdala: relevance for our survival; non-conscious reaction 8. Describe the research results of Joseph LeDoux. How do these results potentially explain non-conscious emotional experiences? A: without aware of the flashed image, we still react to the stimuli. Some emotional responses, especially simple likes, dislikes, and fear, involve no conscious thinking. 9. What exactly is a lie detector test and what are the major assumptions behind its use (in other words, how can experts tell when people are lying)? A: They measure physical responses that accompany emotion, such as breathing and perspiration. 10.
