Miller Office: Voorhies 392 Email: UWP 104F: Writing in the Health Profession. 4 Units. Lecture/discussion. Prerequisite: completion of either UWP 1 or English 3, or the equivalent, and upper division standing. In this course, we will practice several forms of writing that you will encounter as both a student and practitioner in a health field, be it medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy or veterinary work. We will especially work on the skill of presenting similar information to different audiences. While students are expected to know basic essay structure, as well as sentence mechanics, before coming into the class, we will also spend time on style and usage. Texts: Gawande, Atul. Complications Course Reader, available at Davis Copy Shop Hacker, Diana. A Writer’s Reference (Recommended) Assignments: You will be completing the 6000-word writing requirement for this course by doing five written assignments during the quarter (four papers and a final essay exam); in addition, we will have a number of quizzes and in-class assignments. Verbal displays of your critical thinking skills also constitute an essential aspect of your presence in class. An important note: all four papers, and the final, must be handed in to receive a passing grade (C- or better) for the course. The assignments are: Paper 1: Short Technical Explanation : 15% Paper 2:
