Goals For Lecture 1 • Explain the difference between ecology and evolution • Define diversity from the biologists perspective • Understand the morphological species concept • Be able to calculate an H' value and explain : – what the value means – the basic components of the Shannon-Wiener Index What is Ecology? What is Ecology? Ecology is the study of the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment. Its fundamental goal is to determine the biological and physical factors that determine the distribution and abundance of species. The distinction between Ecology and its applications Applications of ecology: conservation biology fire ecology stream and wetland ecology (management) wildlife ecology (management) agriculture (population growth, disease) medicine (bacterial infections) - Environmentalism is NOT ecology nor a science, but a personal value. It is a concern for the environment.
