1 CHAPTER 5: LEARNING DISABILITIES Definition of students with Learning Disabilities IDEA : A disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest as an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, or do mathematical calculations. Definition (cont). IQ-Achievement Discrepancy Definition: (a) Discrepancy between demonstrated ability and actual achievement; (b) exclusion of other factors, and (c) substantiated need for special services. Characteristics of Students with Learning Disabilities 1) LEARNING Normal or above normal intelligence May have high/low motivation to learn Life long condition Characteristics (cont). 2) READING PROBLEMS Word recognition errors (omissions, poor phonological awareness of letter-sound correspondence) Comprehension errors (basic facts, sequence) Other errors (fluency, losing place) Characteristics (cont). dyslexia: subgroup of reading disability; developmental language impairment. In preschool, impairment manifests in difficulties in learning spoken language, school years as extreme word recognition, spelling, comprehension problems.
