Mitigation Strategies and Solutions 2 Mitigation Strategies and Solutions Energy conservation is currently one of the major environmental problems on the planet. Recently many environmental scientists and researchers have expressed the importance of repairing the damage humans have caused for the environment. Conserving energy is a huge part of the solution. Energy is derived from either renewable or non-renewable resources. In the process of transforming natural resources in their natural state to an energy source, carbon dioxide emissions are released into the atmosphere where they harm the ozone (Energy Sources, 2010). Regardless of the type of resource used to gain energy, the entire population needs to conserve energy to save the planet. Energy conservation includes the practice of reducing the amount of energy used. Energy can be conserved by implementing many different methods. Individual methods of energy conservation can be practiced by individuals, groups, or both. While the short term gratification for saving energy is economical, the long term gratification includes reducing carbon dioxide emissions which contribute to global warming and hopefully saving the planet (Energy Sources, 2010). The process of conserving energy saves money, resources, and the planet; the possibilities for conserving energy are endless. Human beings are the primary contributor to energy conservation and resource issues. These issues are important for various reasons including: non-renewable resources will eventually run out if changes aren’t made, the effects of fossil fuels on the ozone are causing global warming, pollution involved with manufacturing energy is adversely affecting all life on Earth, and global warming is introducing many problems

Mitigation Strategies and Solutions 3 that will destroy humanity if not repaired. Interestingly, these major problems can begin to be fixed if human beings do the necessary work. The methods for conserving energy can be simple or complex. The negative impacts resulting in the energy conservation requirements include: the draining of our non-renewable resources. Non-renewable resources are natural resources that can not replenish themselves at a rate consistent with consumption (Berg, 2007). Examples of non-renewable resources include coal, oil, and natural gas (Berg, 2007). The main uses for these resources include energy used to heat homes, energy used to cool homes, and gasoline for vehicles. The positive impacts resulting from energy conservation include research to discover renewable forms of energy, programs that educate individuals on how to become more environmentally friendly, tips on how to use less energy while maintaining needs, and alternatives to using resources for energy. One solution to the energy issues includes continuing to teach people how to
