They summon for him three apparitions: an armed heard, a bloody child and finally a child crowned with a tree in his hand. These apparitions instruct Macbeth to beware of Macduff because he has gone to England. They reassure him that no man born of woman can harm him and that will not be overthrown until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane. Macbeth is reassured but caused to become angry by the line of kings all in the image of Banquo. After Macbeth leaves, he discovers that Macduff has fled to England and decides to kill Macduff’s family. The next scene begins with Ross who has come to visit Lady Macduff. He tries to justify Macduff’s flight to England, which left her defenseless. When Ross leaves, a messenger arrives warning Lady Macduff to flee. Before she can, Macbeth’s men attack her and her son. The next scene begins with Macduff who finds Malcolm at the English court. Macduff urges him to attack Macbeth.
