Axia College Material Appendix E Critical Analysis Forms Fill out one form for each source. Source 1 Title and Citation: Abortion Is a Woman's Right. Center for Reproductive Rights. At Issue: The Ethics of Abortion. Ed. Christine Watkins. San Diego: Greenhaven Press, 2005. 1 Identify the principal issue presented by the source. The main issue in this essay is that a woman has the right to choose abortion. 2 Identify any examples of bias presented by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. I would have to say that the majority of this essay is opinionated and biased. The author makes many comments such as, “women have the right to decide whether or not to bring the pregnancy to term.” This is a biased opinion. 3 Identify any areas that are vague or ambiguous. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “Given the complexity of this decision, the only person equipped to make it is the pregnant woman herself.” This statement is vague because the complexity of the decision is not explained. “Unsafe abortion can have devastating effects on women's health.” Here the effects are not explained making the statement vague. 4 Do you find the source credible? Explain your reasoning. I find that this source is credible because the sources are cited at the bottom of the page. Each source has a proper citation and the information is relatively up to date. 5 Identify and name any rhetorical devices used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “Some women suffer maternity-related injuries, such as hemorrhage or obstructed labor. Denying women access to medical services that enable them to regulate their fertility or terminate a dangerous pregnancy amounts to a refusal to provide health care that only women need. Women are consequently exposed to health risks not experienced by men.” I think that this is the use of scare tactics. Not all women suffer from these CRT 205

consequences. Not all women have these issues with becoming pregnant. “Where death does not result from unsafe abortion, women may experience long-term disabilities, such as uterine perforation, chronic pelvic pain, or pelvic inflammatory disease.” This too would be scare tactics. The writer starts with the most serious possibility to scare the reader into agreeing with her position. 6 Identify and name any fallacies used by the author. If none exist, explain how you determined this. “Forcing a woman to undergo an unsafe abortion violates her right to life.” I think that this is the line-drawing fallacy. “Laws that deny access to abortion, whatever their stated objectives, relegate women to their traditional roles as nurturers and mothers.” This is an example of a genetic fallacy. 7
