Feminist Anthropology According to Bronislaw Malinowski, anthropology is the study of man embracing woman. Feminism refers to the awareness of women’s oppression and exploitation at work, in the home and in society as well as to the conscious political action taken by women to change this situation. The anthropology of women was the precursor to the feminist anthropology. Feminist anthropology is more than the study of women. It is the study of gender, of the interrelations between women and men. Feminist anthropology also involves the study of the role of gender in structuring human societies, the histories, ideologies, economic structuring in human societies, their histories, ideologies, economic systems and political structures. In the early 1970s the new anthropology of women was initiated to confront the problem of how women were represented in anthropological writing. The initial problem was quickly identified as one of male bias, categorized in three layers or tiers. ( incorporate the tiers as you wish if needed)
