C. (2010). The personality puzzle . 5 th edition. New York: Norton. Course Objectives: This course examines scientific theories and research findings concerning personality: “An individual’s characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms – hidden or not – behind those patterns” (Funder, 2007, p. 5). This subfield of psychology is based on the idea that “Every person is in certain respects (a) like all other people, (b) like some other people, and (c) like no other people” (adapted from Kluckhohn & Murray, 1961, p. 53; quoted by Funder, 2007, p. 96). Because this course provides GE credits for writing, it will involve a combination of lectures, exams, and a written assignment. Most of the lectures will be delivered by Professor Gabriel, but your reader or a guest speaker may lecture occasionally as well if the topic covered is in their area of expertise. Your reader will help to prepare and grade the writing assignment and exams. Both of us will be happy to answer your questions in class, during office hours, or via e-mail. There will be two in-class exams, each covering roughly one-third of the assigned readings and lectures. There will also be an optional final exam, which can substitute for a missed in-class exam or a low score on an in-class exam. This optional final will be cumulative, covering entire course, including the final third of the assigned readings. There will be no make-up exams
