INTRODUCTION For some years now, research efforts have been devoted to representing tolerances and assessing their effects on clearances within a given mechanism. However, tolerances are simply the expression of uncertainties at the design stages of the product development process. They provide bounds on dimensional requirements against which the final product must be checked. The purpose of this paper is to extend the same principles to other types of uncertainties, and subsequent phases of the product lifecycle.
