Although the development of a new single axis machine on the macroscale may go unnoticed, the development of such a tool on the nanoscale is a significant achievement. However, several limitations can be envisioned when drilling holes with this proposed device. Some of the concerns that immediately arise include the capability of the drill to actually produce a hole, the potential material applications, the expected life of the drill and the achievable dimensional quality of the hole. In addition to these macro-scale considerations, micro and nano devices experience high forces of attraction which may affect the tool’s functionality.
