General Psychology Unit 2 Homework Signal detection theory is being able to distinguish between signal and noise. The theory states that there are many psychological reasons as to how we discern the two of them by stimuli. It is used by psychologists as measuring how a person makes decisions in a situation where the person is not sure, such as figuring out the distance on a foggy night when trying to cross a road as a car’s beam lights are shining towards you. The brightness of the object is usually used to measure distance, so we believe the object is farther away then what it really is. Another example of this would be the mirrors on the sides of our cars. Cars that appear in our side view mirrors usually appear closer than what they really are.
