Blalock et al., J Neurosci. 23:3807, 2003 Summary of Blalock et al. (2003) Experiment: Designed to identify gene expression changes in the hippocampus occurring as a function of age &/or cognitive ability. Rats of 3 different age groups tested on 2 memory tests; the CA1 region of each brain was excised and assayed by microarray. Results: 1. Only 561 (12%) of the 4681 genes assayed showed changes. 2. 146 of this subset had the necessary functional information. 3. Only 11 correlated only with age, 135 correlated with both age and cognitive ability. 4.
